Meet Wenseslao (Wenses) Reyes, Accounting Student

Hometown: Aloha, OR

Previous high school or college: Portland Community College (PCC)

Wenses, whose first and last name both mean king, is an Oregon native born in Forest Grove. He chose Portland State University (PSU) because it was recommended by his previous teachers, and because it was close to home. Originally, Wenses planned on a two-year degree, but decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree after he started at PCC. “My mother told me you either go to college or you get a job, so I took the placement test for PCC to see if I could go to college,” said Wenses. “I found that I could do it and I stuck with it.”

Why did you choose to major in accounting for your undergraduate degree?

I wanted to experience life in a university. I took accounting in high school and I didn’t like it—got a C and dropped it as a concentration. At PCC I was taking business classes and decided to take accounting again. Suddenly it all made sense to me. Now I would like to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and maybe get a master’s in accounting.

What would you like to achieve before you graduate?

I’d like to be involved in the University and get involved in the recreational program for people with disabilities. I love soccer—Manchester United is my team—so I would like to join clubs, but I’m shy when meeting new people…

What is something others wouldn’t expect about you?

I’m going to go out into the world and do a lot despite being in a wheelchair. I was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia at age 14 which affects my speech and motor functions, but it doesn’t affect my mind.

Like many PSU students, Wenses is also working while attending college. He works as a Little League soccer coach to 12-year-olds, and has taken the team to first place, second place, and fourth place.
