Charles Weber, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Engineering and Technology Management

Charles Weber, Ph.D., joined the Department of Engineering and Technology Management (ETM) in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science in 2002, with an impressive history of academic and career achievements. He holds an A.A. degree in physical science from the American College of Switzerland; a B.S. degree in engineering physics from the University of Colorado, Boulder; an M.S. degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Davis; an S.M. degree in management of technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Ph.D. in management from MIT's Sloan School.

At Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), Dr. Weber progressed from a process engineer in integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing; to a research and development scientist in the IC development center; to a manager at SEMATECH, in Austin, Texas, as an HP assignee. Following his work with HP, Dr. Weber consulted to venture capitalists and high technology start-up firms for three years before coming to Portland State University.

Dr. Weber's research interests include organizational learning, problem solving, knowledge management, innovation, and entrepreneurship. His Ph.D. thesis, "Rapid Learning in High Velocity Environments," dealt with how high tech organizations deal with knowledge in order to compete. His latest research with co-investigator C. Neil Berglund on the economics of photomasks in semiconductor manufacturing was funded by SEMATECH.

At Portland State, Charles Weber discovered he loves to teach. Since the majority of graduate students in the ETM program are already established in the work world, one of his goals is to broaden their base-transitioning them from a single contributor to a manager. He believes that "the secret to success in technology management is to be sociable as well as knowledgeable. There is no such thing as a shy technology manager." In his courses in innovation, entrepreneurship, new product development, strategic management of technology, and knowledge management he strongly encourages his students to come out of their shell.

In the past, Charles Weber filled his spare time with downhill skiing, but he finds less time for that as a proud new father. His wife is also a scientist, so a common negotiation in their household is, "whose conference will we and the child attend next month?"
