Jonathan Strand, Fulbright Scholar
Jonathan Strand, Fulbright Scholar

Inspired by his grandfather who emigrated from Germany after World War II, Jonathan Strand, a first-generation college student, immersed himself in German language and culture at Portland State. After working hard at both PSU and Portland Community College (PCC), his dedication paid off—Jonathan will earn his Bachelor's degree from PSU this spring and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to work in Germany for 2014–2015.

As a recipient of the highly competitive and prestigious scholarship, Jonathan will work as an English teaching assistant and complete a year-long project. His project will be working with his students to publish a travel blog for Nordrhein Westfalen (where Jonathan will be living). The travel guide will serve foreign travelers visiting West Germany, while providing Jonathan’s German students an opportunity to practice their English and get involved in their communities. Jonathan also hopes the blog will grow to include guides by English classes living in other German cities.

“I began studying German to understand more about my grandfather. I wanted to be able to converse with him. But now I realize my liberal arts education has given me much more than that. It’s helped me to understand global issues from the perspectives of different cultures.”

After completing his Fulbright, Jonathan plans to earn a graduate degree in German and teach at a university.
