Each Spring, Portland State recognizes and celebrates the student employees who play a critical role in recruitment, engagement, research, advocacy, community service, and generally keeping our campus services running. The annual celebration, which normally takes place with much pomp and circumstance, honors student employees and student employee supervisors as part of the National Student Employment Association’s week of recognizing the importance of student employees on campuses across the country.

This year due to COVID-related closures, the Student Employment Steering Committee had to get creative, so recognition came in the form of personalized congratulatory videos from those who nominated the winners, and digital certificates emailed to award winners and nominees. The committee received 96 nominations for student employee awards and 107 nominations for six student awards and three student employee supervisor awards.

Veronica Roderick was celebrated as Portland State’s Student Employee of the Year. She was also recognized as Oregon Student Employee of the Year by the Western Association of Student Employment Administrators. For the past 10 consecutive years, Portland State University’s top award winner has also been the recipient of the statewide award.

Veronica works in Student Activities and Leadership Programs as the Co-Director of the Portland State Programming Board and in Admissions and New Student Programs where she currently works as a Student Ambassador and held former positions as Orientation Team Lead and Orientation Leader. Veronica’s nominators cited her enthusiasm and sense of humor that create a fun environment for coworkers and other students but also her strong work ethic and collaborative nature as recognition-worthy.

Other 2020 student award winners are:

Rising Star Julia Strunk, Planning, Construction & Real Estate
