The Portland State Chamber Choir presents the second-ever performance of Kile Smith’s The Consolation of Apollo which they will also present at the 2020 World Symposium on Choral Music in Auckland, New Zealand - the most prestigious scholarly event on choral music in the world. The Consolation of Apollo combines the words of the Apollo 8 astronauts as they rounded the moon and saw earthrise for the first time are combined with text by the medieval scholar Boethius contemplating humanity’s place in the universe. The work culminates in the Genesis creation text, which the astronauts read to the world as humanity gazed at the earth for the first time via a television transmission. The concert will conclude with a series of Chamber Choir favorites as alumni join the current choir to celebrate the end of Ethan Sperry’s 10th season as conductor of the ensemble.
