Samuel Mequanint

 

Samuel Mequanint immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia during his first year of high school. Despite not knowing English, he continued as a freshman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Following his junior year, he moved to Portland where he graduated from Westview High School and continued his education at Portland Community College.  He transferred to PSU in fall 2012 where he is a pre-pharmacy Biology major and Chemistry minor.  He has been an active member of LSAMP since he transferred to PSU.  He also served as Treasurer for the Association of African Students Club and is actively involved in Portland’s Ethiopian community. He is currently president of Heber Ethiopia, a community organization encouraging youth and young adults to create positive changes in the community. He also conducts undergraduate research in in Dr. Robert Strongin’s laboratory (PSU Department of Chemistry), focusing on the development of novel fluorescent dyes for biomedical research.  He is currently working as a Learning Assistant for Organic Chemistry where he helps with POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) activities.  Sam loves to play soccer, likes to meet new people, and believes in teamwork.
