Mubark Mebrat
Mubark Mebrat

Mubark was born in Aje, Ethiopia, a small town near Shashamane. He was raised by his grandparents for much of his very early life, before immigrating at the age of 5 with his older brother to the U.S., where his father was already living. The journey to America dominates his childhood experience; it allowed him to experience places and cultures in Ethiopia, Kenya, and the U.S. Once he moved to America and navigated the many cultural differences, Mubark was involved in athletics, afterschool and student leadership activities. In high school, biology and chemistry and related subject attracted him in large part due to brilliant and strong teachers. As an undergraduate, he initially declared a Biology major with a pre-med pathway, but after taking a class and interacting with biochemistry students and professors, he elected to become a Biochemistry major/Computer Science minor. Toward Mubark’s goal of a career in biomedical research, he is conducting undergraduate research in the laboratory of Drs. Amanda McCullough and Stephen Lloyd at OHSU.
