Meet J.J. Veliz

Hometown:
I'm from Forest Grove, Oregon.

Previous high school or college:
I went to Forest Grove High School and recently completely my Associates of Oregon Business Transfer at Portland Community College and General Studies too.

Major:
I'm currently a Business major exploring both Marketing and Human Resources.

Right now I'm actually trying to decide on both or if I'm possibly going to switch majors entirely.

Why did you choose your major?
I chose my major in business because I felt like it's a universal degree; one that can be used in many different ways. I took an Economics class in high school and became fascinated with how our economy works and fluctuates (Big shout out to Ms. Lewis for being a great teacher!) English was another of my favorite subjects and I felt like I could use both my passions to strive toward a career that can provide a lot for me in not just post university, but in my everyday life too. I've already learned so much just from taking Management 299, too.

Why did you decide to pursue your degree at PSU?
PSU has one of the most renowned business schools in the state, and really the nation. It was an easy decision after community college because of how many resources there are available to help me to continue to explore my career path. I'm excited to see what the school has to offer in terms of possible study abroad options, too. I recently earned a $500 scholarship and a passport previously so I'm planning on using it to study business relations overseas hopefully.

What are you most excited to learn or accomplish here?
I'm excited to learn more about the programs that are offered as well as what the instructors I have to teach me. I'm the type that will absorb as much as I can if it fascinates me enough so I'm definitely eager to see how I do in a university setting. I want to accomplish getting my BS in possibly Marketing or Human Resources. Although both are tentative at the moment. The Athletic and Outdoor program is also on my radar.

Could you tell us a bit about a strength, skill, or talent you have?
A strength that I have is my ability to analyze any given situation and adapt to it accordingly. I'm flexible with my attitude and ability to understand any situation thrown at me. A skill would maybe be my ability to design and plan when given a project. A talent is a hard one, but I'd say I’m pretty good at costume designing. I've always liked being creative when I get the chance.

What is something others might be surprised to learn about you?
I would say people would be surprised to learn I'm half Caucasian, especially when you see me for the first time. Also I'm a big Pokemon fan so there's that too.
