My Background

I came to PSU as a career-changer. I received formal training in medicine and a PhD in Neuroscience, before I found my interest in the world of business. My field of research was learning and memory, specifically the memory of space, which I studied using awake, behaving rats. While pursuing postdoctoral research into the mechanism of visual memory storage, I found my interests in management consulting and entrepreneurship. I also wanted to move to Portland to be with my wife- we both loved the Pacific Northwest during our graduate years and had decided to make this our home for the foreseeable future. Therefore, PSU was a resource for both changing my career from academia to business as well as to get a strong understanding of the Portland business community.

My Experience at Portland State University

I joined the full-time MBA program in Fall 2015, and have been enjoying my experience very much! The first quarter courses are intense, as a lot of information needs to be assimilated and applied within a short time. However, I took the advice not to let the academic pressure keep me from career development and networking events at PSU (such as Connect to Community, Kickstarter, Net Impact, Business competitions), and benefited greatly from this decision. I feel having received as much business education outside the class as from within. Fall is also a term to start looking for internships, and the career center is a great resource for polishing resumes and practicing for interviews. Life at PSU has been very busy so far, but it has also been fun doing it all together with my cohort.

My Future Goals

When I joined PSU, the two future directions I had considered were either healthcare management, or management consulting, in line with my previous backgrounds and interests. However, I had kept my options open. So, now that I have developed an interest in Finance and Business Analytics, the future may play out differently. Or not. The key is to find something where can work with people, and where I can use analytical thinking to develop strategy- perhaps for a company, or for a startup, or maybe just for myself- I don’t know for sure yet. It will be fun to find out…
