Meet Assistant Professor Javier F. Casado Pérez

Javier F. Casado Pérez, PhD, NCC, serves as assistant professor of counselor education in Portland State University’s Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling program and interim clinic director of the PSU Community Counseling Clinic. Dr. Casado Pérez earned his doctor of philosophy in counselor education and supervision from The Pennsylvania State University, with a doctoral specialty in teaching and higher education. He received his master of science in mental health counseling from Monmouth University, specializing in relationship and family counseling. Dr. Casado Pérez’s scholarship focuses on: equity and justice in higher education, with special emphasis on faculty diversification and minoritized faculty life; relationship and family counseling in child welfare systems; mental health justice and social activism; and teaching and learning in counselor education and supervision.

Dr. Casado Pérez brings a critical and student-centered philosophy to his teaching, inviting students to direct their learning, engage with questions of disparities in mental health, and keep equity and justice at the forefront of their practice. Dr. Casado Pérez has earned multiple certificates in residential and online teaching, and is continuously working to improve his instructional practice. Currently, he teaches core courses in counselor education, as well as advanced courses in the Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling specialty program.

Dr. Casado Pérez has been part of planning committees for both state and national conferences, and serves on the editorial boards for prominent scholarly journals, including the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development and the Journal for Specialists in Group Work. He is an active professional member in various national associations, such as the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, and the Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling. Dr. Casado Pérez regularly engages with his university community, and works diligently to create further connections with his broader Portland community. He joined PSU in September 2017, and is very excited to become a member of the close-knit Viking community.
