Isabel J. Rodriguez

Isabel J. Rodriguez is a third-year transfer student and McNair Scholar, majoring in Physics and minoring in Mathematics. During her four year hiatus from the academic setting, she had the opportunity to travel, engage with the K-12 community, and discover her passion for astronomy. She moved to Portland in 2013 and worked with after school programs and as a preschool teacher before beginning her studies at PSU. Her leadership roles have included serving as a peer mentor for the BUILD EXITO program, a co-lead for LSAMP’s STEM Public Outreach Community (SPOC), and recently as a general physics workshop leader and in-class learning assistant. She is an LSAMP scholar and an Oregon Space Grant scholar, support which went towards her research with Dr. Mark M. Weislogel (Materials and Mechanical Engineering).  Isabel’s other research experience includes work with Dr. Erik Sanchez (Physics), which has inspired an interest in nuclear physics and its role in the dynamics of neutron stars. Her goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in Astrophysics, and she hopes to inspire young students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds to pursue higher education.

Isabel is a recipient of the 2017 Christine and David Vernier Scholarship and the President's Equal Access Scholarship.
