COE Dean Dr. Marvin Lynn

Dr. Marvin Lynn serves as Dean and Professor in the College of Education at Portland State University, Oregon’s premier urban research university. A lifelong leader and community servant, Dr. Lynn has served in a number of key leadership roles in public universities of varied sizes and types. He served as a program coordinator for very successful programs at the University of Maryland and the University of Illinois at Chicago—both large public urban-serving research universities. He served as Associate Dean at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Dean at Indiana University South Bend—both regional comprehensive institutions.

Dr. Lynn has served on a number of national committees including the Accreditation Council for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (2015-18), a member of the Policy Advisory Board for the edTPA (2013-Present), Chair of the Global Diversity Committee for the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) from 2012-2014, Affirmative Action Officer for Division K (Teaching and Teacher Education) and Division Co-Chair for Division G (The Social Context of Education) for the American Educational Research Association (AERA)—the largest and most prestigious educational research organization in the world. Dr. Lynn also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Carnegie Project for the Education Doctorate and is a member of the nominating committee for AACTE. He also serves as a member of the steering committee for Project Pipeline Repair: Restoring Minority Male Participation and Persistence in Educator Preparation Programs, a multiyear, W.K. Kellogg funded collaboration with state higher education policy leaders and educator preparation faculty at five HBCUs. In addition, he serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Partners in School Innovation—a nonprofit organization devoted to transforming education disparities in underserved public schools. At the state level, Dr. Lynn serves on the Oregon Governor’s Educator Advancement Council and participates as a member of the Educator Equity Advisory Committee. Locally, he serves as a member of the Multnomah County Education Collaborative—a collective of county superintendents and higher education leaders and the Guiding Coalition for the Portland Public Schools focused on developing the district’s next strategic plan.

Dean Lynn is recognized internationally for his scholarship on race, education, and the work and lives of Black male teachers in the United States. He has published dozens of research articles and book chapters on these topics with his most recent co-authored article appearing in the Journal of Teacher Education in 2018, the premier teacher education journal in the field. Dr. Lynn is the lead editor on the Handbook of Critical Race Theory in Education published in 2013 on Routledge Press. The second edition of the Handbook will be issued in 2020.

He received his PhD in Social Sciences and Education with an emphasis on Race and Ethnic Studies from UCLA, a Master of Arts in Curriculum & Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from DePaul University. He is a member of Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi which recognizes and promotes academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engages the community of scholars in service to others.
