The PSU Foundation raised more than $46 million in private gifts for Portland State University in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, an 18 percent increase over the prior year. This marks the fifth year in a row that private giving has increased and more than triples the $12.8 million raised in 2010, when Françoise Aylmer joined PSU.

The 2015 philanthropic results help position PSU as a leading public urban university, and are reflective of the leadership Aylmer, president and CEO of the PSU Foundation, has demonstrated.

  • The endowment surpassed $57 million and grew 44 percent over the past five years.
  • Scholarship awards increased by 18 percent over the prior year.
  • Direct support to PSU in 2015 from the PSU Foundation was $26.0 million, compared to $15.4 million in 2014.

A July 2014 merger brought PSU University Advancement and PSU Alumni Relations under the PSU Foundation. This newly-merged entity continues to receive national recognition, including a recent story in The Chronicle of Philanthropy: Mergers Turn University Foundations into Fundraising Juggernauts.

Investing in higher education bolsters the economy and provides PSU’s community partners with graduates who are well-prepared to enter the workforce. There are now more than 100,000 PSU alumni and over 18,000 students living in the greater Portland area. Philanthropy has a direct impact on PSU students, generating university resources so they have the best possible education and greater opportunities for success.

“The generosity of our donors lies at the heart of our success,” said PSU President Wim Wiewel. “They understand the crucial role that private philanthropy plays in the lives of our students and the future of our community.”

The increase in scholarships, thanks to the Creating Futures campaign, raised more than $54 million. Groundbreaking this fall for the renovation and expansion of the School of Business Administration building was funded with more than $19 million in philanthropic giving. The Stott Recreation Center is being renovated into the Viking Pavilion and Academic Center, with $14 million in philanthropic support.

“Donor support is fueling unprecedented growth, renewal and opportunities on our campus,” said Aylmer. She went on to say that, “Philanthropy has the ability to transform PSU.”
