Starting January 2012, Portland State University (PSU) will offer more sexual misconduct resources for students. These services include a sexual assault nurse examination program and an all-inclusive website that will give students, staff, and community members a convenient, centralized way to find out about support services, reporting options, and PSU policies regarding sexual assault.

The new Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program offered through PSU’s Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) will support all students who are survivors of sexual misconduct. Previously, victims of sexual misconduct had to travel to off-campus hospitals for this service. Students can now receive trauma-informed medical services, including forensic evidence collection, disease testing, and wellness care on campus.
The new SANE Program is the result of a long-term planning process and collaboration between PSU and members of the Multnomah County Sexual Assault Response Team, including the Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office Victim Assistance Program, and the Portland Women’s Crisis Line. PSU is the first school in the metro area to offer these services.

PSU also developed the new Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response website ( to support community access to information and resources. Features of the website include clear directions for students who wish to access help after an assault or report an assault; information for faculty and staff on how to support students; and suggestions for students who wish to participate in campus efforts to prevent sexual violence.

Vice President of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs Jackie Balzer stated that “Portland State University is proud to host ongoing efforts to address sexual misconduct in our campus community. We are continually working to improve our coordinated campus efforts to prevent and respond to incidents of sexual misconduct.”
