(Portland, Ore.) August 24, 2017 —“The Doors of Heaven,” the new recording by the Portland State Chamber Choir, reached #1 on Billboard’s traditional classical chart this week. This is the first time a recording by a university ensemble has ever reached the Billboard charts.

“The Doors of Heaven” is the first American recording of works by composer Ēriks Ešenvalds. It was released August 11 on Naxos, the world’s largest classical music label.

The album was also a #1 seller on both iTunes Classical and Amazon Classical last week, and the track “Rivers of Light” was featured on the Apple Music’s A-list Classical Playlist.

“These accolades are a testament to our students’ hard work and musical excellence,” says Dr. Ethan Sperry, the Barre Stoll director of choral activities at PSU. “I’m so proud of our students for creating a recording that resonates with audiences all over the country.”

The Chamber Choir will perform works from “The Doors of Heaven” at a concert on November 10 & 12 at First United Methodist Church. Ešenvalds will travel from Latvia to attend the concert.

“The Doors of Heaven” is available for purchase on Amazon and iTunes, as well as at the choir’s concerts. The album is produced and edited by Erick Lichte and engineered by John Atkinson & Doug Toutelot. Recording took place in January and May 2016 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Southeast Portland.
