Kelsey Henderson, Criminology & Criminal Justice faculty, co-authored an article titled "Investigating Predictors of True and False Guilty Pleas," published in the journal Law and Human Behavior. Co-written with Lora Levett (University of Florida), the article reveals that an estimated 90-99 percent of convictions are obtained via guilty pleas, and roughly 11 percent of individuals exonerated with the help of the Innocence Project had falsely pleaded guilty. In this study, the authors investigated whether attorney/advocate recommendations affect plea decision-making for guilty and innocent individuals.
