PSU Institute for Asian Studies Scholarship Awardees

The Institute for Asian Studies Student Scholarship is competitive award offered to full-time, degree seeking, PSU students, who are pursuing an academic program at Portland State, or abroad, with a focus on Asia and/or Asian language studies, with selection priority given to students who are under-represented college students admitted to a PSU approved study abroad program in an Asian country.

Wendy Mayhugh is an under-represented student at PSU who has studied multiple languages including Chinese, Korean, Japanese and French. The Institute for Asian Studies Scholarship award is helping Wendy to study abroad at Yonsei University in South Korea, for the 2016-2017 academic year. This study abroad opportunity is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Wendy, who will study Korean language, international studies and Asian studies at Yonsei University.  This opportunity will help her become more culturally competent and aware individual. Wendy hopes to speak Korean proficiently and find her career path while studying abroad.

Erin Theuninck is an under-represented college student who has returned to college because of her interest in Japanese language and studying abroad. The Institute for Asian Studies Scholarship Award is helping Erin to fund a study abroad experience in Japan during Summer 2016.  As a student coming back to college to major in Japanese, financial issues and and responsibilities outside of school loom much larger than when she was last in college 10 years ago.  Upon graduating next spring in 2017, Erin hopes to attend graduate school and explore deeper Japanese culture through the lens of Japanese language.

Olivia Holden is an under-represented college student who is a PSU Master's of Urban and Regional Planning candidate, researching about innovations in Urbanization in China. The Institute for Asian Studies Scholarship Award is helping Olivia to travel to Shenzhen, China, in Summer 2016, to participate in the Portland State University China Innovations in Urbanization Program.  Olivia is very happy to be given this opportunity so she can immerse herself in the place, people and culture of China. Studying another culture will assist her in achieving an equitable and inclusive place for all.
