Alvaro Vasquez is an undergraduate student at the School of Business majoring in Finance and Economics. He works as a Peer Advisor offering assistance to students on their academic and career matters. After graduation, Alvaro hopes to land a job in the non-profit sector as a financial advisor. We met with Alvaro to find out about his career as well as personal goals and learn about express advising at the School of Business.

Why did you choose PSU?

I have lived in Oregon since I can remember, so, of course I knew PSU and its excellent reputation. And I appreciate the inspiring environment at the School of Business: all these like-minded peers, striving for a business career.

Why did you choose to study Business?

I have always been interested in economics. It goes without saying that to enroll in a Business program was the right decision.

What made you want to be a Peer Advisor?

As a student, I understand very well how daunting the task of navigating through the Business School can be. As a Peer Advisor, I wanted to help my peers connect to available resources on campus.

Why should students seek express advising? What should they expect? How should they prepare?

Students should seek express advising because it’s a quick and easy way of getting your questions answered. For example, how many credits are left to complete the studies? They can expect suggestions from a peer rather than from an advisor telling them what to do. They should prepare a set of questions before they come in.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself, hopefully, with a job I really enjoy. I would like to work in the non-profit sector, helping with personal financing.
