Bee Thinking, an online and retail beekeeping supplies company in Portland, Ore., is abuzz over its upcoming April 10 appearance on ABC’s hit show, Shark Tank.

Bee Thinking co-owners and entrepreneurs, Matt and Jill Reed MFA ’13 (creative writing), have revolutionized backyard beekeeping with their beautiful and intuitive beehives and by educating beekeepers on methods that let bees build combs naturally. Their popular Top Bar Hives, Warre Hives and Langstroth Hives are locally sourced-and-built from Western Red Cedar and designed for backyard beekeepers interested in pollinating their gardens and their neighborhoods.

ABC’s Shark Tank, a top-rated, nationally broadcast show, offers entrepreneurs the chance to pitch wealthy investors, a.k.a. Sharks, their business or idea. With a regular viewership ages 18-49, Shark Tank is famous for launching some companies into the financial stratosphere while others come crashing down.

With their alternative, handcrafted beehives rapidly gaining market share throughout the United States and overseas, the Reeds are eager to share their beehives with the Sharks, as well as a wider audience. “Backyard beekeeping is exploding throughout the world,” says Matt Reed. “We hope our Shark Tank segment informs the world about the critical role honeybees play in our ecosystem, helps people make better decisions in their daily lives in regard to pollinators and makes more people join the ranks of responsible beekeepers.”
