What do the literary giant Leo Tolstoy and the avant-garde film-maker Dziga Vertov have in common? This documentary film explores both artists’ aesthetic motivations, outlooks on life, and biographies, incorporating rare footage from Russian archives.

Vertov brings Leo Tolstoy’s basic artistic principles and literary traditions to the big screen in his best films “Man with a Movie Camera” and “Kino-Eye.” This documentary film reveals the parallels between Tolstoy’s and Vertov’s work and is narrated from the point of view of Alexander Lemberg, Dziga Vertov’s close friend and former camera operator. Lemberg’s perspective is certain to make an impression on the audience.
