Field Burns:
Photographs by Patrick Collier

Trained in philosophy, literature, and art, Patrick Collier moved to Oregon from Chicago in 2003 and began farming in the Willamette Valley. Although he has presented his sculpture and text- and photo-based conceptual work in exhibitions in Portland and Corvallis, Collier may be best known to regional audiences for his perceptive critical writing for the online journal Oregon ArtsWatch. With this selection of recent digital prints in the Broadway Gallery, the College of the Arts samples a unique project within Collier’s larger practice: “Field Burns,” a series of remarkable photographs of the terrain surrounding the artist’s home in rural Stayton. The landscapes provide an occasion for viewers to consider a range of issues, from agricultural practices in our state to the nature of artistic regionalism, while delighting in the sheer beauty of Collier’s compositions.
