Languages and the Professional World
Thursday, February 7, 2019 - 6:00pm

Join the World Languages & Literature department for a roundtable with professionals and language specialists.

Thursday, Feb. 7th | 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Academic and Student Recreation Center, Room 001

In a highly competitive work place, being able to communicate in another language is a great asset but it’s not the only skill that learning a foreign language will give you. Learning languages allows you to relate better to others, boosts your confidence as you develop strategies of communications, and get used to unfamiliar communicative territory. When you learn a foreign language, you don’t just learn to speak it; you learn how to decode discourse, and critically assess what a text or a person means (tone of voice, irony, what one says between the lines).

Panelists include Dana Ghazi, a bicultural qualified mental health professional (Arabic); Kristina Kermanshahche, founder and CEO of Perspicace Inc., a consulting firm operating in the feilds of artificial intelligence and high performance computing (Persian); Aart Lovenstein, a psychologist and licensed professional counselor (Hebrew and Dutch); and Ana Luisa Ponsirenas, ecosystem development manager at Intel Open Source Technology Center (Spanish and Portuguese).
