Fridays@4: Thomas Robinson, LEVER Architecture: Innovation, Architecture, and Experience

Innovation, Architecture, and Experience

LEVER Architecture founder Thomas Robinson will discuss his firm’s work through the lens of innovation and research. His presentation will explore how LEVER projects have challenged traditional methods of construction, produced new urban conditions, pioneered resilient systems, tested next generation materials, and forged connections between urban development and rural economic growth. The firm’s diverse approaches to innovation share a goal of creating powerful architectural experiences in everyday building typologies.

Thomas F. Robinson, AIA, is the founding principal of LEVER Architecture, a design practice based in Portland, Oregon, that is dedicated to the creation of buildings that elevate human experience. The firm works closely with creative and mission-driven clients and has a body of built work that includes student housing for the Pacific Northwest College of Art, campus planning and design for major entertainment companies, and the L'Angolo Estate Winery. LEVER is nationally recognized for material innovation and pioneering work with mass timber construction. The firm designed Albina Yard, the first building made from US-produced Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT); and their research and testing for the Framework Project led to the first successful permitting of a wood high-rise in the US.

In 2017, LEVER was named to Architectural Record's Design Vanguard and the Architectural League of New York's Emerging Voices. The firm's work has been published in the Atlantic, New York Times, Surface, and Dwell among others; and was featured in Timber City, an exhibition at the National Building Museum on Washington, D.C.

About Fridays@4: Each Friday at 4pm during most of the academic term, PSU School of Architecture students and faculty gather together to hear from professional designers and architects, academics, visiting artists, innovators, and students in the program, with refreshments and updates from faculty and your student leaders. Fridays@4 is a perfect way to wrap up each week of intense creativity in studio, and get inspired for the productive weekend ahead.

We encourage attendees to bring their own beverage cup in order to reduce waste in Shattuck Hall.

Free and open to the public.
