A look at some of the elements that contributed to the new styles of American Musical Theater and American Folk Opera, including early American opera, minstrel shows, operetta, vaudeville, ragtime, jazz, the Harlem Renaissance, etc. PSU voice faculty member Damien Geter, who is making his Metropolitan Opera debut in their current production (in theaters on February 4th), will contribute to the discussion.

PSU School of Music and Theater presents Carl Halvorson in a series of lectures designed to engage those who are curious about opera and want to learn more, as well as passionate opera lovers. We will explore the rich history of the art form. The series features plenty of music spanning over 500 years, including definitive recordings and live performances by PSU students, faculty and guest artists. Each session will offer background and insight on current local presentations and productions. Free and open to the public.
