When Claire Faucher and Erin Yankus weren't competing on the basketball court, they were competing in the classroom. Faucher and Yankus, the only two seniors on this year's NCAA Big Sky Champion women's basketball team, both took their studies seriously and helped set a high academic standard for athletes at Portland State University.

"It's our No. 1 priority," says head women's basketball coach Sherri Murrell. "They are here as students first, and then we play basketball."

Faucher says she's proud that her teammates work hard in class and on the court. "Everybody just wants to do well, not just in basketball, but in everything," she says. "That's one of the things that has contributed to our success over the past couple of years."

Yankus says it was a challenge to find time for classes, especially during the hectic basketball season. On the road, they study whenever they can: on buses, on airplanes, and in hotels. "We just have a lot of determined individuals," she says. "It seems like people rise to the challenge."

They both plan to attend graduate school in the fall. Faucher is getting an MBA at George Fox University, and Yankus is going on to study speech and language pathology at PSU.
