City Club’s May 2006 “Citizens Read” selection

Urban Studies and Planning Professor (and lifelong sci-fi aficionado) Carl Abbott’s new book, "Frontiers Past and Future: Science Fiction and the American West" (University Press of Kansas, 2006), is the first to explore the ways science fiction writers have drawn directly on the history of the American West to frame their visions of the future.

Abbott draws upon a cast of notables that include Robert Heinlein, Buck Rogers, Ursula Le Guin, William Gibson, and Buzz Lightyear to illustrate themes common to both science fiction and Western U.S. history. "Frontiers Past and Future" is the May 2006 selection for Citizens Read, the City Club of Portland’s book club and discussion group.
