Young Historians Conference

Join us for some or all of the Young Historians Conference, a powerful, authentic experience for young history scholars in our high schools and an opportunity to celebrate their scholarship and provide a professional forum for dialogue and feedback. The annual event is co-sponsored by the PSU History Department and PSU Challenge, a dual-credit program that offers PSU courses at area high schools for which students can earn PSU credit.

Challenge History classes include American History, Western Civilization, and World History. Every year, a major assignment in these classes is a history research paper. Students are invited to submit their papers to the History Department for an opportunity to present them at the conference. History Professor John Ott mentors a jury of History graduate students in assessing the submissions to select up to 30 papers for presentation and to determine top awards.

The conference is organized into concurrent sessions of an hour and 15 minutes each, by themes determined by the jury and Professor Ott. Each session has at least three presenters who have approximately 10 minutes to present their paper. The audience includes classmates and guests and Friends of History are always welcome. The sessions are moderated by a History faculty member who also leads a discussion of the session’s papers.

Winners are announced at the end of the day and are rewarded with Powell’s gift cards, which have often been provided by the Friends of History.

The conference is one of the most significant ways Challenge students connect to PSU and to a college experience, while still in high school.
