Workshop on Liquefaction Mitigation Study using Bio-Remediation

This workshop is hosted by Portland State University (PSU) in collaboration with the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure Equipment Facility at the University of Texas at Austin (NHERI@UTexas) and the Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG) at Arizona State University. The workshop includes a seminar on Sept. 11 (1 to 5 pm) at PSU and a field demonstration on Sept. 12 (9 to 11 am) at a research site.

The workshop will focus on a recent project where the overall objective is to evaluate the potential for microbially induced desaturation (MID) to mitigate liquefaction potential in relatively fine-grained soils. Following completion of treatment, the NHERI@UTexas mobile field shaker (T-Rex) will be employed to measure the reduction in pore pressure generation potential in the treatment zone. Periodic monitoring using crosshole seismic measurements will be conducted following the T-Rex testing for the next 5 years to evaluate the persistence of the MID. 
The project addresses a major seismic problem in Oregon, where a substantial portion of the infrastructure is founded on non-plastic to low-plasticity silts that are susceptible to liquefaction in a Magnitude 9 Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. The two sites selected for this study are near the Portland International Airport (PDX) in northeast Portland and the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) hub located in northwest Portland.
