About the Talk

This talk discusses women’s empowerment at the forefront of the global development agenda. Yet, little is known about which economic or political roles make women more electable. Drawing on data from four survey experiments conducted in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Jordan (2012-2014), we show that electability varies according to the skills candidates bring to the job. Voters prefer business over civil society candidates. Males in particular prefer male candidates. But, the gender gap in electability is larger for business candidates–roles for which women are often stereotype as unfit–than civil society candidates. When candidates run on civil society platforms, gender bias is narrowed. We argue that this is because many view women as caring and community-oriented, and thus as having the traits that many equate with successful civil society activists.

About the Speaker

Lindsay Benstead, Ph.D. is Associate Professor in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government and Director of the Middle East Studies Center (MESC) at Portland State University. She is a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC.

About our Co-Host

This talk is co-hosted by the Middle East Partnership Initiative's Student Leader Program. This program is a U.S. State Department-sponsored leadership and civic engagement training program for undergraduate community leaders from across the Middle East and North Africa. As a part of their experience, student leaders come to Portland to study conflict resolution, community leadership, and democratic institutions, while developing a plan for a civic engagement project that they will implement upon return to their own communities.

Stay after the talk for a Meet & Greet from 6-6:30pm to welcome these students to the PSU campus!
